Strengths

65W on 2m (65/25/10/5W) from a compact, reliable mobile. 207 memories. CTCSS and DTCS encode/decode. Built-in speaker, and an optional UT-115 unit adds D-STAR digital voice/data. Icom's most popular single-band mobile, kept in production for over a decade.

Weaknesses

2m only. No DTMF keypad on the radio (requires DTMF microphone). No dual-band. The display is basic. Single-band 2m mobiles lost ground to dual-band alternatives.

Verdict

The 2m mobile that would not die. Icom kept the IC-2200H in production because every year, a new group of operators needed a reliable, affordable, high-power 2m mobile. Many clubs bought these in bulk for emergency communications.

The IC-2200H is one of those plain, sturdy 2-meter mobiles that did exactly one job and did it for years on end. It puts out a genuine 65 watts on the high setting, steps down through 25, 10, and 5 watts when you don't need the full punch, and covers the 2-meter band that any Technician-class license opens up. There is no second band here and no SSB; it is FM voice for repeaters and simplex, plain and simple.

One wrinkle worth knowing: the IC-2200H shipped as an analog radio but had an internal slot for an optional D-STAR board (the UT-115, later the UT-118). Most people who bought one never fitted the board and ran it purely as an FM rig, so if you find one secondhand, assume it is analog unless the seller specifically says the digital module is installed. Standard features included a weather-alert receiver, CTCSS and DTCS tone signaling, a big front-mounted tuning knob, and a data port that could feed an external GPS.

Icom has long since replaced it with the IC-2300H, which dropped the D-STAR option but added MIL-STD-810G ruggedization. If you are looking at the IC-2200H today you are buying used, and it competes mostly with other plain-Jane 2-meter workhorses like the IC-2100H that came before it. As a first mobile or a knockaround rig for the truck, it still does the job.
