Strengths

100W on all bands including 2m (most rigs do 50W or less on VHF). A 32-bit DSP from the IC-756PROII, 51 digital filter widths (no optional filters), a built-in ATU, an RTTY decoder, and 3 separate antenna ports. It uses a digital PSN for clean transmit, and one reviewer called it IC-756PROII technology at IC-746 price.

Weaknesses

Discontinued. No 70cm. A B/W LCD (no color or waterfall). No touchscreen. No USB audio (CI-V only). 9 kg. 23A max draw. Superseded by the IC-7410 (better IP3) and then the IC-7300 (SDR). Parts are getting harder to find.

Verdict

An HF/6m/2m base with VHF power. The IC-746Pro brought IC-756PROII DSP to a rig covering HF, 6m, and 2m, all at 100W. The 51 digital filter widths and built-in ATU made optional filters obsolete. For HF+VHF in one box with no power compromise, it remains good value used at $600-1000. The IC-7410 successor dropped 2m, as did the IC-7300; nobody has replaced this exact combination.

The Icom IC-746PRO is a much-loved all-mode transceiver that spans HF, 6 meters, and 2 meters in a single base-station chassis, delivering a full 100 watts on every band including 144 MHz. Released in 2001 as a DSP-upgraded successor to the original IC-746, it put a 32-bit floating-point digital signal processor and 24-bit converters at the heart of the radio, giving it digital IF filtering with 51 selectable shapes, DSP noise reduction, automatic and manual notch filters, and twin passband tuning.

That combination (true HF-through-2-meter coverage, 100 watts everywhere, a built-in antenna tuner, and modern DSP) made the 746PRO a do-everything station radio, equally at home chasing HF DX, working 6-meter openings, or running 2-meter SSB. Its receiver and clean transmit audio earned lasting respect, and it remains a sought-after used rig. In Europe the same radio was sold as the IC-7400.

It is a discontinued model. Compare it with the later IC-7410 and the flagship-class IC-756PRO III.
