Strengths

All amateur bands in one radio (HF through 23cm), with dual receivers, a built-in TNC (packet-cluster auto-tune), Sky Command (remote HF via VHF/UHF), and a satellite mode with an instant key. It has six antenna ports, a built-in ATU and TCXO, a 50 Hz CW filter, and a sub-RX covering airband, 220, and military bands. Users praise its SSB audio.

Weaknesses

Discontinued (limited new stock). No color display, waterfall, or spectrum scope. No touchscreen. No D-STAR/DMR/C4FM. IF-DSP only on the main band (the sub is AF-DSP). 23cm requires the UT-20 or the TS-2000X. Large and heavy for portable. The TS-890S succeeded it (HF only); nothing replaces the full multi-band capability.

Verdict

An all-band do-everything transceiver. The TS-2000 covers more bands, has more antenna ports, and does more than almost any other single transceiver: HF through 23cm, dual receivers, a built-in TNC, satellite tracking, Sky Command remote operation, and DX-cluster auto-tune. Nothing has replaced its exact capability set, and users rate its SSB audio highly. Factory-fresh units are running out.

The Kenwood TS-2000 is a do-everything base station, a single transceiver covering HF, 6 meters, 2 meters, and 70 centimeters, with optional 23-centimeter (1.2 GHz) coverage via the UT-20 module. It delivers 100 watts on HF, 6 meters, and 2 meters, 50 watts on 70 centimeters, and 10 watts on 1.2 GHz, operating SSB, CW, FSK, AM, and FM across the lot. For a single box, it covers an extraordinary span of the amateur spectrum.

Its standout features include true IF-stage DSP on the main band with filtering as tight as a 50 Hz CW filter, a second receiver for the VHF/UHF bands, a built-in TNC for packet and APRS, and full satellite operation with automatic Doppler tracking. That combination made it a popular all-in-one station for operators who wanted HF and the VHF/UHF weak-signal and satellite bands without filling a desk with separate radios.

It is a discontinued model. Compare it with the TS-890S and the all-band Icom IC-9700.
