Yaesu's premium flagship: 112 dB dynamic range, +40 dBm IP3, dual independent receivers, OCXO option two completely independent receivers, each with full IF DSP published 112 dB dynamic range and +40 dBm IP3 (flagship-class strong-signal numbers) triple-conversion superheterodyne main receiver five crystal roofing filters: 300 Hz, 600 Hz, 3 kHz, 6 kHz and 15 kHz (300 Hz on the MP/Limited) OCXO (oven-controlled crystal oscillator): +/-0.05 ppm stability (on the MP versions) 200 W from a pair of VRF150 48 V MOS-FETs 75 W Class-A mode for a very clean transmit signal 32-bit floating-point IF DSP on both receivers three electroluminescent auxiliary displays (sub-frequency, graphical wave, menu) built-in automatic antenna tuner built-in AC mains power supply (no DC operation) optional SM-5000 station monitor (scope) and DMU-2000 data management unit (external scope/panadapter) IF DSP: variable bandwidth, notch, noise reduction, audio peak filter and equalizer on-screen CW/RTTY/PSK decoder model variants: FTDX5000, FTDX5000D (+SM-5000), FTDX5000MP / MP Limited (adds SM-5000, OCXO and 300 Hz roofing filter)
Strengths

Published 112 dB dynamic range and +40 dBm IP3 (flagship class), with dual independent receivers, five roofing filters (300 Hz on the MP/Limited), and an OCXO (+/-0.05 ppm) option. It runs 200 W (75 W Class-A) from a 48 V VRF150 MOS-FET PA, with IF DSP on both receivers and a built-in ATU and PSU. It is the parent design of the FTDX3000's receiver.

Weaknesses

Discontinued. ~21 kg. AC only (no DC operation). No touchscreen. No built-in spectrum scope or waterfall (the optional SM-5000 monitor or DMU-2000 adds display). A superheterodyne, not an SDR. $2500-4500 used. The 100 W FTDX101D offers comparable receiver performance for less. Succeeded by the FTDX101MP.

Verdict

A premium contest flagship. The FTDX5000MP ranks among the great contest flagships of its era, alongside the Icom IC-7800 and Kenwood TS-990S: 112 dB dynamic range, +40 dBm IP3, dual independent receivers, five roofing filters and OCXO stability. The 48 V MOS-FET PA and 75 W Class-A option produce very clean transmit. At $2500-4500 used it is serious contest/DX hardware; the FTDX101MP successor adds hybrid SDR and a touchscreen.

The Yaesu FTDX5000 was Yaesu's flagship HF and 6-meter transceiver from late 2009, a top-of-the-line contest and DX radio built around an exceptional receiver. It delivers 200 watts from a pair of VRF150 power FETs, covers 160 through 10 meters plus 6 meters, and offers a comprehensive set of selectable roofing filters at 300 Hz, 600 Hz, 3 kHz, 6 kHz, and 15 kHz placed early in the receive chain.

That filtering, combined with a low-noise front end, gave it standout strong-signal numbers for its day: roughly 112 dB of dynamic range and a third-order intercept point around +40 dBm on CW, figures that put it at or near the top of independent receiver rankings. With dual receivers, a separate outboard scope/display option, and meticulous construction, the FTDX5000 (offered in D and MP versions) was a serious operator's flagship.

It is a discontinued flagship. Compare it with the FTDX3000 and the current FTDX101D.
