Strengths

A capable Fusion mobile with true dual receive (two independent receivers) and simultaneous C4FM monitoring on both bands (WiRES-X plus local at once). Bluetooth is built in, with GPS, navigation, and backtrack, plus APRS and WiRES-X. A 2-inch QVGA color TFT, a 63-channel band scope, two external speaker jacks (A/B separate), 1104 channels with MBAG, a FACC heatsink, voice recording, and microSD.

Weaknesses

$400-500 is premium. No cross-band repeat (the FTM-100DR had it). No USB-C. The MH-85A11U camera mic and SSM-BT10 headset are sold separately. The display is 2-inch QVGA (smaller than the FTM-400XDR's 3.5-inch touchscreen). The menu has a learning curve.

Verdict

A full-featured C4FM mobile. The FTM-300DR adds true dual receive and built-in Bluetooth to the FTM-200DR's feature set, and the dual receive is the key difference: monitor WiRES-X on one band while listening to local repeaters on the other. For operators invested in System Fusion, it covers the full range of mobile features.

The Yaesu FTM-300DR is a dual-band C4FM/System Fusion mobile radio and was, for several years, the sweet spot of Yaesu's Fusion mobile line. Its digital mode is C4FM (System Fusion), Yaesu's own standard, which is not DMR and not D-STAR. It also does analog FM. It covers 2 meters and 70 centimeters and requires an FCC Technician-class license or higher to transmit; it is not a GMRS or license-free radio.

Its key advantages over the cheaper FTM-100DR and FTM-200DR are true dual receive (two independent receivers, so you can monitor two frequencies at once) and built-in Bluetooth (no add-on needed). It also has a 2-inch full-color TFT display, built-in GPS, APRS, a microSD slot, Wires-X (including portable node), and a band scope. A common complaint is the lack of memory banks to organize its 1,100-plus channels.

It has been discontinued, superseded by the FTM-500DR. The current flagship is the FTM-500DR; the entry Fusion mobile is the FTM-100DR.
