Strengths

A full-featured 10-meter base station with AM and SSB, large analog meters, a frequency readout, and the talkback and roger-beep features enthusiasts want. A capable desktop radio still widely sold new.

Weaknesses

A 10-meter amateur radio, so a ham license is required (not legal on CB). Large. Talkback/echo can annoy others. Needs a 13.8V supply for desktop use.

Verdict

A full-featured 10-meter base. The DX-2517 is a long-running Galaxy base station for AM/SSB enthusiasts who want a full desktop radio. It is a 10-meter amateur radio (license required), not a CB-band set, despite the styling and retail placement.

The Galaxy DX-2517 looks like a CB base station and is often sold next to them, but it is actually a 10-meter amateur base station, not a CB. It transmits on the 28-29 MHz amateur band, and operating it legally requires an FCC amateur radio license. It is not a license-free radio, and it is not FCC-certified for the CB service.

It is a substantial desktop unit, notable for its twin large meters and a deep feature set: a five-digit frequency counter, both AM and FM plus single sideband and even CW, PA with echo, variable talkback, and separate receive and transmit clarifiers. Its power (around 10 watts AM and 25 watts SSB) exceeds the legal CB limits, another sign of its amateur, not CB, classification. Like other radios of this type it is frequently converted for illegal high-power 11-meter use.

It remains in production and is widely sold new. Within Galaxy's 10-meter range it is the base-station counterpart to the mobile DX-94HP; if you actually want a legal, license-free CB instead, the Galaxy DX-959 is the company's certified SSB CB.
